IISO Achieves CISNA Accreditation: A Major Milestone for Islamic Education in Japan

International Islamia School Otsuka (IISO) in Tokyo is proud to announce that it is now officially a CISNA Accredited School.

Alhamdulillah, this important achievement marks a new chapter in IISO’s journey of continuous growth and reflects our commitment to providing students in Japan with high-quality education grounded in Islamic values.

For our students, parents, teachers, staff, and wider community, CISNA accreditation is more than a certificate. It represents an independent quality-assurance process and a commitment to continuous school improvement.

What Is CISNA Accreditation?

The Council of Islamic Schools in North America (CISNA) provides accreditation services for Islamic schools globally. According to CISNA, its accreditation standards are designed to improve the quality of education in Islamic schools and provide a means of reviewing and evaluating all aspects of a school’s program through an Islamic lens.

CISNA accreditation examines four major areas of school quality:

• Governance

• School Leadership

• Teaching & Learning

The accreditation process is designed not only to confirm that standards are being met, but also to establish a systematic framework for continued improvement.

Why Is Accreditation Important?

For parents and the wider community, accreditation provides an important level of external quality assurance.

CISNA explains that accreditation helps verify a school’s adherence to its mission and vision, promotes best practices in governance and leadership, supports high academic standards integrated with Islamic teachings, and provides public recognition of a school’s commitment to educational excellence.

The process requires schools to look critically at their own performance through self-evaluation, stakeholder feedback, evidence, data analysis, school improvement planning, and external review.

For IISO, this means that our development is not measured only by what we say about ourselves. Our practices, systems, learning environment, and Islamic identity have been examined against established accreditation standards.

A Rigorous Journey of Self-Evaluation and External Review

Achieving CISNA accreditation required IISO to undertake a comprehensive process of institutional reflection and evaluation.

This included a detailed self-study based on CISNA Standards, stakeholder surveys, supporting evidence and documentation, development of a School Improvement Plan, and an external review visit.

During the review process, the school was evaluated not only in terms of academic programs, but as a complete educational institution—examining how leadership, governance, teaching, learning, school culture, Islamic identity, and stakeholder engagement work together to support students.

This makes accreditation particularly meaningful to IISO because our educational mission seeks to bring together academic excellence, character development, and Islamic identity within the context of education in Japan.

CISNA describes accreditation as a framework for systemic and sustainable continuous improvement. Accredited schools are expected to continue monitoring their progress, implementing their School Improvement Plans, analyzing evidence and assessment data, and reporting on their development.

At IISO, we therefore see this achievement not simply as recognition of how far we have come, but as a responsibility to continue moving forward.
