At International Islamia School Otsuka (IISO) in Tokyo, Japan, Islamic education goes beyond learning knowledge—it also aims to help students develop character, purpose, and the motivation to use their abilities in meaningful ways.

Today, our Grade 10 and Grade 11 students took part in the first workshop of a new Islamic Studies series focusing on High Ambition (Himmah – الهمة العالية).

The workshop introduced students to the importance of developing a strong sense of purpose, setting meaningful goals, and striving toward them with determination.

What Is High Ambition (Himmah)?

Himmah is an important concept in Islamic character development. It encourages young people to look beyond small or temporary goals and develop aspirations that give direction and meaning to their lives.

For high school students, this is especially important. These are the years when young people begin thinking more seriously about who they are, what they want to achieve, and how they can contribute to their families, communities, and society.

Our aim is not simply to tell students to “aim high.” We want them to explore what meaningful ambition looks like and gradually develop it from within themselves.

Learning Through an Interactive Treasure Hunt

Rather than approaching the topic only through a traditional classroom lesson, the first workshop was designed to be highly interactive.

Students participated in a Treasure Hunt activity, working through challenges that encouraged them to think, communicate, reflect, and discover ideas together.

The activity created an engaging environment in which students could learn about Himmah while actively participating in the learning process.

Through the workshop, students were encouraged to:

  • Understand themselves more deeply and express the thoughts and ideas in their minds.

  • Learn from inspiring role models whose lives, character, and achievements are worthy of following.

  • Develop practical solutions from within themselves, helping them take ownership of their personal growth.

This approach makes Islamic Studies more than a subject to study. It becomes an opportunity for students to reflect, discuss, experience, and apply Islamic values to their own lives.

Developing Purposeful Muslim Youth in Japan

For Muslim students growing up in Japan, Islamic education has an important role in helping them connect their faith and values with the realities of their daily lives and future aspirations.

At IISO, we want students to understand that strong Islamic character is not separated from academic achievement, leadership, service, or future careers.

High ambition should encourage students to seek knowledge, develop their abilities, serve others, overcome challenges, and make positive contributions to the society in which they live.

Our goal is to nurture young Muslims who have both strong values and strong aspirations.

The Beginning of a Year-Long Journey

Today's workshop was only the beginning.

In shaa Allah, we will continue exploring and developing the concept of High Ambition (Himmah) throughout the school year.

Future activities will give students further opportunities to reflect on their goals, learn from inspiring examples, challenge limiting ways of thinking, and consider practical steps toward becoming the people they aspire to be.

Through this journey, we hope our Grade 10 and 11 students will gradually develop a clearer vision, stronger determination, greater self-awareness, and a purposeful mindset grounded in Islamic values.

At International Islamia School Otsuka, this reflects our wider approach to Islamic education: helping students not only understand their faith, but also live its values with confidence, purpose, and positive ambition in Japan and beyond.

High ambition begins with a vision—but it grows through reflection, determination, action, and trust in Allah.
