At the International Islamia School Otsuka (IISO), we believe that meaningful learning happens when students can see, touch, and experience what they study. This week, our Grade 2 and Grade 3 students enjoyed exciting outdoor Math activities designed to strengthen understanding through real‑world exploration.
Grade 3: Learning Tally Marks Through Outdoor Data Collection
To deepen their understanding of tally marks and frequency, Grade 3 students took their Math lesson outdoors. Working in teams with designated leaders, students explored the park and collected data on real objects such as:
• Trees
• Benches
• Ladybugs
• Swings
• Slides
• Poles
After gathering information, students drew tally marks on the ground to organize and compare their findings. This hands‑on activity helped them understand how data is collected, grouped, and interpreted — all while enjoying fresh air and teamwork.
Grade 2: Discovering 3D Shapes in the Real World
Grade 2 students also participated in an engaging outdoor Math activity focused on 3D shapes. During a guided walk, students searched for real‑life objects shaped like:
• Cube
• Cuboid
• Cone
• Cylinder
• Sphere
Students recorded their discoveries by drawing pictures or writing the names of the objects they found. This activity helped them connect geometric concepts to everyday life, strengthening both observation skills and spatial understanding.
Why Hands‑On Learning Matters at IISO
Outdoor and experiential learning is an important part of IISO’s educational approach. These activities help students:
• Apply classroom knowledge in real situations
• Develop curiosity and confidence
• Strengthen teamwork and communication
• Build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts
• Enjoy learning in a joyful, active environment
By combining academic rigor with exploration and creativity, IISO ensures that students grow as confident, capable learners.
A Joyful Week of Learning
We are proud of our Grade 2 and Grade 3 students for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and curiosity during these outdoor Math lessons. Hands‑on learning continues to be a core part of our mission to nurture well‑rounded, motivated learners.
