At International Islamia School Otsuka (IISO), meaningful learning happens when students are given opportunities to create, explore, and express themselves.
This month, our Grade 3 students achieved an exciting milestone by completing a two‑lesson mini project that combined English writing with hands‑on ICT skills—using laptops to create digital presentations about a special family memory.
This project reflects IISO’s commitment to student‑centered learning and technology integration, supporting our Vision 2030 goals of strengthening digital literacy and 21st‑century competencies across all grade levels.
A Simple Project with Powerful Learning Impact
Over two lessons, students planned, drafted, and refined a short narrative about a meaningful family moment. Using guided self‑editing questions, they learned how to improve clarity, structure, and vocabulary in their writing.
They then engaged in peer editing—giving and receiving constructive feedback to help each other improve.
This process strengthened essential English language skills while also building confidence, independence, and ownership of learning.
Developing ICT Skills Through Creative Digital Presentation
Once their writing was polished, students moved to the next stage: transforming their stories into digital presentations. Using laptops, they learned how to:
Design slide backgrounds
Insert and arrange pictures
Format text for clarity and visual appeal
Create engaging, meaningful presentations
These ICT skills are foundational for future academic success, especially in a global city like Tokyo, where digital competence is increasingly essential.
Student‑Centered Learning in Action
Integrating ICT transformed the classroom environment from teacher‑directed instruction into an active, collaborative learning space. Students made decisions about layout, design, and storytelling—thinking critically about how to present their ideas effectively.
Throughout the project, they practiced key 21st‑century skills:
Critical thinking – choosing what details matter
Creativity – designing visually appealing slides
Collaboration – supporting classmates through peer editing
Communication – expressing personal experiences clearly
Information literacy – navigating digital tools responsibly
These competencies align with IISO’s holistic educational philosophy and our mission to nurture capable, confident, and globally aware learners.
A Meaningful and Memorable Learning Experience
For Grade 3 students, this project was more than just a writing assignment. It was an opportunity to express personal memories, strengthen digital skills, and experience the joy of creating something uniquely their own.
By integrating technology into language learning, teachers provided an authentic, engaging, and developmentally appropriate way for students to build confidence and independence—skills they will carry forward as they continue their learning journey at IISO.
