Workshop at Nagoya University: Shaping the Future of Islamic Education in Japan

We are delighted to share a momentous achievement for the International Islamia School Otsuka (IISO). Our esteemed Principal, Dr. Hussam Zaineh, participated in a pivotal workshop titled "Educational Philosophy of Islamic Schools in Japanese Society and Its Prospects for the Future," held on December 21, 2024, at Nagoya University. This significant event was part of a research initiative by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and co-hosted by the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at Nagoya University.

The workshop served as a convergence point for distinguished principals and leaders from Islamic schools across Japan. Among the notable attendees were:

  • Dr. Hussam Zaineh, Principal of International Islamia School Otsuka

  • Dr. Muhammed Shehata, Principal of Sapporo International School

  • Ms. Noriko Nazar, Principal of Jan Academy Preschool

  • Mr. Mohamed Iqbal Mohamed Thalha, Imam of Darul Iman Kasugai Islamic Preschool

  • Dr. Mohamed Elnoby, General Manager of Fukuoka Islamic International School


Workshop Highlights

Part 1: Presentations from Islamic Schools in Japan

The first segment of the workshop featured insightful reports from various Islamic schools, with each presenter sharing unique perspectives and experiences.

Dr. Zaineh delivered an impactful presentation spotlighting the current status and future prospects of Islamic schools in Japan, with a special focus on IISO. His presentation highlighted:

  • Vision and Objectives: Our commitment to fostering academic and moral excellence.

  • History and Curriculum: A journey of growth and innovation tailored to the needs of our diverse student body.

  • Challenges and Successes: The hurdles faced by Islamic schools in Japan and the remarkable achievements of IISO students.

  • Growing Demand: A significant rise in interest in Islamic education in Tokyo, with IISO’s enrollment reaching 170 students for the 2025 academic year. Several grades are now fully subscribed, necessitating waiting lists for new admissions.

Part 2: Expert-Led Discussions

The second part of the workshop featured vibrant discussions led by esteemed experts, including:

  • Masataka Iwahashi, former public elementary school principal and representative of Myanmar Study Tour

  • Yuko Kawaguchi, Director of NPO MANABIYA@KYUBAN

These sessions fostered meaningful dialogue on the growth, challenges, and opportunities for Islamic schools in Japan. Over 50 attendees participated in person, with more than 100 online participants engaging actively, underscoring the significance of this topic.

A Step Forward for Islamic Education in Japan

The workshop was a testament to the collaborative spirit and shared vision among Islamic educators in Japan. Dr. Zaineh’s contributions have further solidified IISO’s reputation as a leader in shaping future generations through a harmonious blend of academic rigor and moral guidance.

Alongside the workshop, Dr. Zaineh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fukuoka Islamic School, represented by Dr. Muhammed Elnoby. This cooperation aims to foster the development and growth of Islamic education in Japan, marking a new chapter of collaboration between the two institutions.

As we reflect on this milestone, we are filled with pride and determination to continue making a positive impact. Our growing enrollment and the overwhelming interest in IISO affirm the need for quality Islamic education, and we remain steadfast in our mission to meet this demand.
