My name is Nao, and I serve as the School Nurse at the International Islamia School Otsuka (IISO) in Tokyo.

Since launching our structured school health services in 2025, IISO has steadily expanded its student health and medical checkup program to ensure that every child learns in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment.

At IISO, student wellness is not an add-on service—it is a foundational pillar of our holistic education model. Physical health directly influences concentration, emotional stability, motivation, and academic achievement. This approach aligns with IISO standards, which emphasize nurturing the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.

Comprehensive Annual School Health System

To monitor student growth and detect concerns early, IISO conducts structured health screenings throughout the academic year:

First Semester

  • Vision (Eye) Checkups

Second Semester

  • Internal Medicine Examinations

Third Semester

  • Dental Checkups

Three Times Per Year

  • Body Measurements (April, September, January)

Tracking height, weight, and overall growth trends.

These regular screenings allow us to:

  • Identify potential health concerns early

  • Monitor developmental progress

  • Communicate proactively with families

  • Support students before minor issues affect learning

Early detection is essential. Vision strain, untreated dental issues, or growth concerns can directly affect classroom engagement and energy levels. Our goal is preventive care—not reactive care.

New for 2026: Hearing Screenings

Beginning in the 2026 academic year, IISO will introduce hearing screenings in response to family requests and best-practice recommendations.

Hearing challenges can significantly impact:

  • Language development

  • Reading progress

  • Classroom participation

  • Social confidence

Many academic difficulties are rooted in physical factors such as:

  • Vision issues

  • Hearing limitations

  • Dental pain

  • Sleep quality

  • Nutrition

By adding hearing assessments, we are strengthening our commitment to comprehensive student wellness.

Our dedicated KENSHIN medical team continues to collaborate closely with IISO to ensure professional, reliable, and student-centered care.

January Body Measurements & Annual Growth Reports

In January 2026, we completed the third round of body measurements for all students.

We are currently preparing annual growth reports, which will be distributed to families starting in April. These reports provide:

  • Height and weight trends

  • Developmental comparisons

  • Indicators for follow-up, if needed

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s growth or physical development, please contact your homeroom teacher or the Nurse Room at any time. Early communication allows us to provide timely guidance.

Dental Checkup – January 19, 2026

On January 19, we conducted our annual dental examination.

Compared to the previous year, results indicated an increase in dental issues, particularly tooth decay in primary (baby) teeth.

Although baby teeth eventually fall out, untreated cavities can cause:

  • Pain and discomfort

  • Infection

  • Difficulty eating

  • Poor oral hygiene habits

  • Long-term dental complications

For this reason, treatment is strongly recommended when cavities are detected.

Preventive Support at School

To support improvement:

  • Students who required assistance received individual tooth brushing guidance

  • The dentist provided a clear explanation of oral health and hygiene

  • Teachers reinforced proper brushing habits in daily routines

Both students and staff demonstrated strong engagement throughout the process. The KENSHIN medical team once again praised IISO for our high level of organization, cooperation, and student attentiveness.

As the school nurse, I am deeply appreciative of this positive evaluation and proud of our students’ responsible attitude.

If families would like additional guidance on proper brushing techniques or oral care routines at home, please contact the Nurse Room (Nao). We are always happy to assist.
