IISO Grade 5 Health Activity: Learning the Power of Daily Toothbrushing

IISO Grade 5 students joined Japan’s 83rd National Toothbrushing Competition, learning proper brushing, gum health, and daily habits for lifelong well‑being in Tokyo.

International Islamia School Otsuka (IISO) proudly participated in the 83rd National Elementary School Toothbrushing Competition, an annual nationwide health initiative involving over 6,100 schools across Japan. Our Grade 5 students joined this meaningful program to deepen their understanding of oral health, self‑care, and the lifelong importance of healthy habits.

🪥 Building Healthy Habits Through Hands‑On Learning

Using the toothbrush and floss provided during the activity, students practiced proper brushing techniques while looking in the mirror. This simple act—observing themselves closely—helped them understand that all health awareness begins with knowing one’s own body.

Students learned about:

  • Gum health and early signs of gingivitis

  • Effective brushing and flossing techniques

  • How consistent brushing for just one week can improve gum inflammation

  • The importance of self‑checking their oral condition daily

This mirrors our school’s philosophy: small daily actions build long‑term success, whether in academics, sports, or personal well‑being.

💡 Why Oral Health Matters for Growing Children

During the session, students explored how oral health connects to overall physical development. They discovered that:

  • Oral muscles support posture and eating habits

  • Chewing activates the brain, improving focus and learning

  • Daily brushing helps detect early signs of health issues

  • Healthy teeth support confidence and communication

Students also examined their gums and learned to identify early warning signs—an empowering step toward taking responsibility for their own health.

🍬 Chewing Test Homework: A Fun Way to Learn

As part of their homework, students chewed the special gum included in the activity kit and checked how evenly it mixed—a simple test used in Japan to evaluate chewing strength and oral muscle function.

Two students achieved the highest score of 4, showing excellent chewing balance and muscle coordination. The entire class worked hard and enjoyed the challenge.

🌱 Reflection: The Power of “Keeping Going”

In the final reflection, students discussed how daily toothbrushing is more than a routine—it is a practice of perseverance. Just like studying, reading, or training in sports, brushing every day builds discipline and shapes future success.

They learned that:

  • Teeth can reveal a lot about overall health

  • You cannot check your entire body every day, but you can check your mouth

  • Consistency leads to long‑term well‑being

  • Taking care of oneself is an act of responsibility and gratitude

At IISO, we want our students to grow into young people who understand their bodies, care for their health, and build habits that support their dreams.

🌟 Closing Message

We hope this experience inspires our Grade 5 students to take a deeper interest in their teeth and overall health. By practicing good habits every day, they are building the foundation for a strong, confident, and healthy future.
